Five Former Athletes and Coaches to be Inducted into USATF Hall of Fame at Next Month's Black Tie and Sneakers GalaBy Adam Kopet USATF announced the 2017 USATF Hall of Fame class Wednesday. Five former athletes and coaches will be inducted at the USATF Hall of Fame Black Tie and Sneakers Gala held next month at the Armory. Bryan Clay leads the class as the most recently retired athlete. He captured decathlon silver at the 2004 Olympics and won gold at the 2008 Olympics. He also added a IAAF World Outdoor Championships decathlon gold in 2005. Leroy Burrell is a seven-time world record setter, including twice breaking the 100-meter world record. He ran 9.90 seconds in 1991 in New York City and 9.85 in 1994 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Burrell is in his 20th year as head coach at the University of Houston, his alma mater. Lindy Remigino won two Olympic gold medals at the 1952 Olympics. He won the 100 meters in 10.4, the same time as the top four runners. Later examination of the electronic times had Remigino crossing the line in 10.79, 0.01 seconds ahead of second place. Remigino also won gold with the Team USA 4x100 relay team. Patty vanWolvelaeremade-Weirich is a two-time Olympian and multi-time American record holder in the sprint hurdles. She made her Olympic debut as a high school athlete in 1968, placing fourth in the 80-meter hurdles, clocking 10.5. She broke the 100-meter hurdles American record in the semifinals at the 1972 Olympics, running 13.26. Her best time came in 1978 when she ran 13.14. Bill Squires was the founding coach of the Greater Boston Track Club in 1973. He coached some of the best marathoners of the 1970s and 80s, including Bill Rogers, Alberto Salazar, Dick Beardsley and Greg Meyer. More news |
