Comments

Marquee match-ups and top-ranked stars give fans plenty to cheer Friday and Saturday

EUGENE, Ore. - The dream to compete at Hayward Field becomes a reality to thousands of high school and middle school athletes this weekend, as the Oregon Relays presented by AthleticNET hosts the finest collection of track and field talent in event history.

Oregon Relays Accepted High School / Middle School Entries

Girls Track Events

One of the true highlights of the 2022 Oregon Relays is the clash between two of the greatest sprinters in Oregon history. Mia Brahe-Pedersen (So., Lake Oswego, OR) and Lily Jones (Sr. Roosevelt, OR) are set to square off in both the girls 100m and 200m events.

Brahe-Pedersen owns a slight 11.43-11.52 edge in the 100m, as both sprinters rank top 10 in the country, while Brahe-Pedersen sits US#6 in the 200m, while Jones ranks within the top 25 nationally. This is a two-race battle all fans should focus on, with the 200m on Friday and the 100m on Saturday.

The Wilson Long Beach (CA) sprint crew is ready to shine, as well. Samarra Monrroy (Sr., Wilson Long Beach, CA) and Aujane Luckey (Jr., Wilson Long Beach, CA) are two of the nation’s best 400m runners, with Monrroy ranking US#12 in the event. The program ranks US#4 in the 4x400m relay and US#10 in the 4x200m relay and enters as the top seed in both events.

In the distance events, Dalia Frias (Sr., Mira Costa, CA) will not only help guide her team’s DMR against some of the nation’s top distance squads, but she’ll also compete in the mile. Frias is having one of the all-time best track season’s in history. She currently ranks US#1 in the mile in 4:35.06, while also owning US#1 in the 3200m with a best of 9:55.50.

Frias will have some great competition in the mile facing Ella Borsheim (Sr., Bellarmine Prep, WA), who currently ranks US#8 in the 3200m. With nearly a dozen athletes entered with sub-5 personal bests, the girls mile is going to be one to watch.

Borsheim is also entered in the 800m, where she’ll face future college teammate Chloe Foerster (Sr., Jesuit, OR), who currently sits US#3 in the 800m with a seasonal best of 2:06.10. Joined by Magdalene Williams (Sr., Summit, OR) and Logan Smith (Sr., Boise, ID), the girls 800m offers tremendous top-level depth.

Boys Track Events

A clash of 300m hurdle titans is set to take place Saturday night, as Lyricc Lopez (Sr., Foster, WA) and Isaac Lewis (Jr., Wilson Long Beach, CA) go head-to-head at Hayward Field. Lopez currently ranks US#11 in the event with a best of 37.26, while Lewis ranks in the U.S. top 25 with a 37.82 best.

Two other marquee events to watch are the boys mile and 800m contests. Christopher Caudillo (Jr., Clovis, CA) is entered in the boys mile with a US#6 mark of 4:05.32 to his name. While Caudillo will no doubt give his DMR squad Saturday night an edge, he’ll have a chance to shine bright individually on Friday night. Caudillo ranks US#5 in the 3200m, as well, with an 8:45.19 performance to his name earlier in the month.

In the boys 800m, Carter Cutting (Jr., Corner Canyon, UT) looks to challenge the 1:50 barrier. After winning the 800m at the Arcadia Invitational earlier this month, Cutting will look to better his 1:51.55 personal best.

Similar to the girls sprint relays, the Wilson Long Beach (CA) boys squad is ready to shine on the track. In particular, the team seems poised to do something special in the 4x400m relay, where the squad currently ranks US#7 with a season’s best mark of 3:16.30.

Boys Field Events

The throwing events will be something to watch at the Oregon Relays, especially the boys discus. Jeremiah Nubbe (Sr., Rainer, WA) is having himself a season, currently ranked US#1 in the discus with a best of 205-2.

Not only does Nubbe rank US#1, but he’s thrown over 200 feet three separate times this season, with his worst performance being 194-3 mark, which would still rank him US#8. Nubbe also plans to compete in the hammer, where he ranked as one of the nation’s best in 2021.

Nubbe will find strong competition in the discus against fellow Northwest native Elijah Jackman (Sr., Tigard, OR). Jackman threw a US#10 performance in the event last weekend, launching a 193-2 mark. The clash between these two should be fierce.

In the javelin, another battle will wage, with Dash Sirmon (Sr., Walla Walla, WA) and Austin Milton (Jr., Sherwood, OR) squaring off. Sirmon ranks US#6 in the event with a best of 207-3, while Milton ranks within the U.S. top 20.

The pole vault runway is another focal point in the field events, with Landon Helms (Sr., Emmitt, ID) looking to improve upon his 17-2 best from early April, a mark that places him US#3.

Eli Lawrence (Sr., Meridian, ID) offers another national caliber field event athlete at the Oregon Relays. The senior ranks US#5 in the triple jump with a 49-6 best. Lawrence is also entered in the boys long jump.

Girls Field Events

JaiCieonna Gero-Holt (Fr., Emerald Ridge, WA) is one of the great surprises nationally this spring. The freshman phenom currently sits US#2 in the high jump with a personal best of 6-0.75, which happened this past weekend, but she has also shown consistency, having cleared 6-0 to win the Arcadia Invitational.

Fans will get a chance to see Gero-Holt compete in the high jump on Saturday, as well as the 100m hurdles, an event she owns the top seed in.

The girls hammer is another top field event, with multiple U.S. top 10 ranked athletes. Ariel Ammentorp (Sr., Union, WA) currently sits US#5 in the event, while Madison Speer (So., Tualitan, OR) sits US#9.

Hallee Hughes (Jr., Willamina, OR) enters the girls javelin as the top seed and one of the very best in the country. Hughes ranks US#5 in the event, having thrown 148-1 earlier this month and topping 130-0 numerous times.
