Top squads from California, Illinois, Utah, New Jersey, Idaho, Washington and Oregon offer thrilling national-class fields

EUGENE, Ore. - For the 2022 edition of the Oregon Relays presented by AthleticNET, meet organizers honed in on building elite fields for the high school boys and girls distance medley relay events, and with fields finalized, fans will be very pleased.

With a promise of fast times, deep and talented fields, and competing at legendary Hayward Field, those both in attendance and watching online now have a chance to watch some of the nation’s best distance talent compete in the final high school events Saturday around 6pm PT at the Oregon Relays.

Leading the girls DMR field, Buchanan (CA) and Mira Costa (CA) head north to Eugene from the Golden State. Buchanan is led by the trio of juniors Grace Hutchison and Sydney Sundgren and freshman Sierra Cornett, entering Saturday’s contest as the top seed. Mira Costa follows the lead of star Dalia Frias, as the senior currently ranks US#1 in both the mile and 3200m.

The duo of York (IL) and Prospect (IL) add Midwest flavor to the Oregon Relays. York and Prospect bring incredible depth to the event, while showing their distance running prowess this past fall as the teams took first and second place at the Illinois State Cross Country Championships.

Cherokee (NJ) enters the contest coming off an impressive indoor campaign, where the school placed second in the DMR final at Nike Indoor Nationals. Boise (ID) is another top contender and follows the lead of middle distance standout senior Logan Smith, who ranks US-top 25 in the 800m, along with sophomore Samantha Smith.

In addition to the number of teams traveling across the country to compete in the DMR showcase, top squads from Oregon headline the entries. Lincoln (OR) follows the lead of senior Riley Cash, while having run a US-top 10 mark in the 4x800m relay this season already. Summit (OR) is also entered, with senior standout Magdalene Williams, who ran 2:08.03 for 800m in 2021.

The boys DMR field is equally as loaded with talent, starting with the trio of Clovis (CA) and Buchanan (CA), and Farmington (UT). Clovis is led by junior standout Christopher Caudillo. Caudillo is having an incredible 2022 campaign, currently ranked US#6 in the mile and US#5 in the 3200m, having run 4:05.32 and 8:45.19.

Farmington and Buchanan bring in middle distance running prowess, as well. The two squads currently sit US#8 and US#9 in the 4x800m relay, while having national-class 800m standouts. Noah Ray leads Buchanan and ranks US#18 in the 800m, while Ethan Peterson leads the charge for Farmington and sits US#33 in the 800m event.

An Oregon trio of teams in Franklin (OR), Lincoln (OR), and Ida B. Wells (OR) should also compete for the victory at Hayward. The three teams matched up at the PIL Varsity Relays earlier this month in the DMR, with Franklin running 10:19.28, just ahead of Lincoln’s 10:20.18 and Ida B. Wells’ 10:20.67, all top-20 performances in the nation.

Teams from Tualatin (OR), Crater (OR), and Sheldon (OR) offer additional top-level depth to the field. All three squads are led by some of the top distance talent in the west, with Tualatin following the lead of brothers Caleb and Aaron Lakeman, Crater with junior standout Tyrone Gorze, and Sheldon with senior Ben Collins.

Fans can now purchase their tickets to one or both days of the Oregon Relays on the University of Oregon Ticketmaster website, while fans that can’t make it in-person can watch the event live on RunnerSpace via RunnerSpace +PLUS.
