MONDAY UPDATE: An error in the official scoring was corrected on Sunday and after re-tabulating the results, Boise ID moved ahead of Wilson (Long Beach) CA and was declared the co-ed team championship winner of the Oregon Relays, 122 points to 120. One of the sprint medley relay results had been left out at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday and it caused a five-point swing at the top of the standings. Both teams have been notified of the mistake. Boise will celebrate with a pizza party after its Monday afternoon practice.

Nico Colchico, Samarra Monrroy Part Of Team Effort To Lift Bruins To Great Final Session At Oregon Relays; Boise ID Wins

Long Beach Wilson of California hoisted the Oregon Relays co-ed team trophy Saturday night at Hayward Field and aimed to show that its season will be defined by high-caliber performances on the track and not the fight that broke out at the end of the Arcadia Invitational two weeks ago.

The Bruins' team effort was punctuated by dominating victories in the boys 4x400 relay (3:17.65) and girls 4x400 relay (3:49.53).

Long Beach Wilson finished with six first-place performances.

“It shows we are working in the right direction,” Wilson head coach Neil Nelson said. “We’ve always been about team, but our individuals added and stepped up to that. We came out here to focus on individual events, so coming in here and winning it while leaving some good kids at home shows we are moving in the right direction.”

Two weeks have now passed since the incident at Arcadia, which came after the conclusion of the final boys 4x400 relay and also involved Fresno Central, and the team was unified and focused on its trip to Eugene for the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.

Senior Nico Colchico led the charge for the Bruins as he a had full weekend of racing competing in three events and came away with a win in the boys 800 meters, running a lifetime-best 1:54.26. Colchico was also part of the 4x400 relay win and also finished second in the mile with another personal-best 4:11.25.

“It means a lot to us,” Colchico said. “We’re all one big family so it means a lot for us to win this together and it brings us all together even more.”

Senior Isaac Lewis picked up another win for Long Beach Wilson in the boys 300-meter hurdles, running 38.21. The boys 4x400 team included Colchico, Lewis, Marcel Mitchell-Francis and Leroy Crook.

Senior Samarra Monrroy did her part on the girls side by winning the 400 in a personal-best 54.49, and then also helping her 4x400 team win by nearly 10 seconds.

“I felt this was a great experience,” Monrroy said. “It was amazing to come out there and run with my team. I feel like we’re just going to get better from here and I felt grateful to be out here.”

Junior teammate Aujane Luckey also ran well in the 400, coming away with second place in a season-best 54.91, which is just a little under a second from her personal-best time from her sophomore 2021 season, when she ran 53.94. Loren Webster also won an event for Wilson, taking the Freshman Girls 100 in 12.80.

Other top performances from the Bruins included two second-place finishes from the girls 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, and two top-three finishes from Mitchell-Francis (second in 49.24) and Crook (third in 49.36) in the boys 400.

It was the fourth consecutive appearance for Wilson at the Oregon Relays, following impressive performances at the meet in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The 4x400 relays teams broke the meet records. The boys time dipped under Wilson's 2018 win in 3:17.69. The girls broke Valor Christian CO's 2018 record by nearly three seconds.
