Camas, Summit pile up points at Oregon Relays

The Camas Papermakers (Wash.) scored a combined 97.5 points to earn first hardware and a pizza party on Saturday at the Oregon Relays at Eugene's Hayward Field.

Camas used its overall depth and strong running from its distance crew -- including its NXN-qualifying girls cross country roster -- to pile up points.

"We knew we could score a lot of points," Camas girls coach Alisa Wise said. "We as a coaching staff always look at the results from last year and we know what our strengths are. Then we start plugging kids in where we think we can maximize points."

Last year, Federal Way WA won the combined team title and used that outcome as a springboard to matching Class 4A boys and girls WIAA Championships.

Camas would like to follow that same pattern.

"It gives us a lot of confidence," said senior hurdler Ryan Gunther

Summit of Bend OR edged out Central Valley WA for second place and the additional pizza party slot.

Even without individual stars Alexa Efraimson (Camas) and Matthew Maton (Summit), the programs they were once part of are moving forward as dominant programs within their respective states.

The high school competition at the Oregon Relays also featured strong participation from British Columbia. Zion Corrales-Nelson of St. Thomas More BC swept the girls 100, 200 and 400 dashes. Camryn Rogers from McMath Secondary swept the girls hammer and shot put competitions.

In addion to Maton's big open 1,500 meters on Friday, Sherwood's Ben Milligan made a splash with his US#2 7-0.25 high jump -- the best in Oregon in eight years.

The pole vault saw brother and sister Joey and Abby Weiler from R.A. Long WA sweep titles. Joey cleared 15-4.25 and Abby made US#8 13-1.50.

The Summit girls sprint medley relay ran 4:09.22 for US#8 and an all-time Oregon state best. The Storm also won the girls DMR and 4x400.

The Central Catholic OR girls showed their sprint depth with dual wins in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Kolbi Sims from Eagle ID won both the high jump (5-4.25) and long jump (18-9.75).

Sophie Cantine from Lakeside was second in the 800 (2:16.50) after kicking past Lindsey Bradley of Richland to win the 1,500 in 4:33.68.

The Bellarmine Prep WA boys ran US#8 in the DMR with a winning time of 10:18.46.

The Grant OR boys won the 4x100 relay in 42.18. Two members of that quartet, Harrison Schrage (triple jump) and Julius Shellmire (200) won individual events.

Max Lydum of Central OR thew US#4  197-0 to win the hammer.

Taylor Lyman from Reynolds BC won the 800 meters with a big kick in the final 150 and clocked 1:54.16.
