Hayward Field, EUGENE, OR - 4/27/07 - The Oregon Invite was held before the XO Invite this year.  Those who remember, last year’s meet featured special sections at the Oregon Invite for those who qualified out of the XO Invite.  These athletes performed in several events and gave the Oregon Invite an idea of what was to come in these developmental fields.

This year, some familiar faces were seen again at the Oregon Invite.  No, you didn’t miss another special XO Elite section, but if you were paying attention you might have seen double XO Champion and former Sandy star Sheryl Page in the women’s 800 representing Mt. Hood Community College, where Sheryl has already earned a conference title in Cross Country.  XO record holder Ally Romanko, formerly of North Bend, dropped her PR down to 2:10 in the 800 to finish 7th overall!

Katherine Tripp, two-time XO discus champ, earned an 8th place finish in the B section at the Oregon Invite while XO high jump champ, Emily Gillespie, finished 7th at Oregon.  Who can forget last year’s dominating performances in the 100 and 200 by former Reynold’s star, Latasha Essien?  She finished 3rd at Oregon with a 12.37 in the 100.  And last, but certainly not least, Rachel Yurkovich, two-time XO champ, meet, state, and national record holder in the javelin, now holds the school record at Oregon.  She finished 2nd behind Olympian Christina Scherwin of Denmark.

Two athletes who traded winner and runner up spots at last year’s XO in the 100 and 200, Ryan Bailey and Aaron Campbell were also on hand.  Bailey, who snuck into the 100 meter B sections at the Oregon Invite while he still competes at McKay High School, will be on hand at XO after winning the heat in 10.79, while Aaron Campbell, who now runs for the Ducks, finished 8th in the 100 in 11.18.

The top distance recruit in the nation of two years ago, Kenny Klotz, was on hand for the men’s 5000, he finished 9th in section two in a time of 14:14.72.  Klotz was the XO Elite mile champ last year.  The 3000 meter champ of last year’s XO was Ken Scoggin, he was seen in the men’s 1500, as were Dylan Coleman (who now runs for Lane CC) and Jarrett Ziemer (now with Mt. Hood CC) who finished third and fifth respectively behind Scoggin.

Marshall Ackley now competes for Oregon and just accomplished his first decathlon.  As a multi-event star in high school, and XO 300 hurdles champ, Ackley knew he would mature as a decathlete.  He was seen in two events at the Oregon Invite finishing 9th in the javelin and 6th in his heat of the 400 hurdles.

There were many more, and we apologize for those not mentioned.  But we salute you athletes who continue to build on your talent beyond high school.  Congratulations and keep working hard!

Added Notes:
XO is fortunate this year to have Natural Progression as our guest band.  A relatively new group on the scene, NP was started in the fall of ’05 and their unique blend of hip hop, jazz, and rock attracts a huge following wherever they perform.  With the goal to “uplift the spirit of the people with their music amidst a time of chaos,” NP attracted 700 to their most recent show!

If you plan to be in town for the weekend, remember to stop by Hayward to cheer on the start of the first annual Eugene Marathon.  The marathon course snakes its way around Eugene and part of Springfield finding its way from Hayward to Autzen Stadium and will include over 4000 participants in this year’s field, some of whom will by aiming for Olympic Trials qualifying marks!

Lastly, OregonLive.com will be webcasting a blog throughout the meet at http://blog.oregonlive.com/runoregon/.
