EUGENE - 4/13/06 - The North Bend Girls Track and Field team is ready to make a statement Saturday April 15h at the XO Invite at historic Hayward Field, where the Bulldogs will be vying for a team championship five weeks later on the same track. The XO Invite, put on by track and field club Team XO out of Eugene, is the only regular season high school meet held each year at Hayward.

The balanced team out of the Farwest district came oh so close at the 3A state championships losing to Marist by only three points in 2005. Head Coach Steve Greif lost state champion javelin thrower Ashley McCrea and state placing high jumper Heidi Davidson, but returns a team packed with experience and talent.

Senior all-around stud Ally Romanko leads the way after scoring 17 points herself at the state meet last year, while also running the anchor leg on the sixth-place 1600 meter relay team. Romanko is an incredible talent. She ran her PR in the 800 at the XO Invite, taking first with a time of 2:15.9 last year. Her finish in the 800 helped her team finish second in team scores amongst all divisions ahead of many 4A schools. Romanko then went on to place at state in the 800 (third), the 300 hurdles (third), and the pole vault (fourth). Her PR’s are intimidating: 100-12.9, 200-26.7, 400-59.5, 800-2:15, 1500-5:00, Pole Vault-10’6”, 300 Hurdles-47.7. This coastal girl has range.

“Ally Romanko is certainly an athlete with a lot of range. She has been a 12.9 100m sprinter and also a top ten finalist at State Cross Country meet the past two seasons,” said Greif. “Each meet she insists on doing 4 events...and often they are not the same four!”

Romanko doesn’t need to worry about putting her endurance abilities on display with Senior and veteran distance warrior Megan Hibner on the team. Hibner has consistently been one of the best girls in the state in the 1500, 3000, and Cross Country throughout her high school career. The future Oregon State Beaver is only one second off the school’s 3000 meter record at 10:12. She was a state placer in the 1500 (third) and 3000 (second) in 2005. Hibner ran into some illness this winter, but has been fighting through and is opening up her track season this week with a league meet on Tuesday and the XO invite Saturday.

“Megan is one of the most pleasant and helpful athletes you will ever meet,” said Greif.

These two outstanding athletes are bolstered by past sprint district champion Alishia Newman in the 100 and 200 and Kassy Lynass who was part of the second place cross country team in the fall and state placer last year in the 800 and 1600 relay team last year. Greif also believes the team should get possible scorers at the state meet in the 400 relay, 400 meters, and throwing events.

“Although we have lost some big points with the graduation of some seniors on our girl’s team, we still have reasonable goals of finishing as champions of the Far West League for the fourth consecutive season and placing in the top five at State.”

After three consecutive district championships on the girl’s side and four straight on the boy’s and a few state trophies, it is obvious Greif has something going on down there just outside of Coos Bay. Expect impressive performances from the North Bend girl’s team and up and coming Bulldog boy’s team Saturday April 15th at the XO Invite at Hayward Field starting at 11 AM.
